Conclusion

Given the infinite and unending idiosyncratic perceptions that can be illuminated from a body of works, we should never have to leave that realm when trying to reconstruct an understanding of an author’s collective works. This returns one to the ultimate question of: What is the purpose of Art? In an era in which the cult of originality requires a constant and unending creation of “new works,” we have lost sight of the overall intent of literary analysis. Professors, critics, students, and readers need not specialize in envisioning works in terms of queer theory, race criticism and Marxist theory alone. Any external theory that one uses to read all of the works they confront, is effectively like wearing blinders. However, we need to read the text and exalt its component parts, which link it with the canon, and its author’s compendium. Grounded textual analysis should be the very backbone of literary criticism.
